Fire safety is an important compliance issue for all businesses - and the enforcement activity of fire brigades emphasises the point, as the following examples show: Directors Fined Two of the directors of a Newmarket furniture showroom company were convicted of twelve offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. The offences came to light when the fire brigade inspected the premises following a fire in October 2010.

According to a global survey from KPMG, board members at divisional, subsidiary and corporate level are currently committing 18% of fraud, up from 11% in 2007.

A 23-year old employee was grievously injured by a computer controlled conveyor system for moving steel beams. He was looking into an outlet point to check on the work, when his clothing became caught in the machine and he was dragged between a moving measuring head and a wall to be crushed into a gap measuring just 125mm (a little under 5” – a little less than the width of a CD case).

The Bribery Act 2010 came into effect on the 1 July 2011 – it has come into effect following pressure on the UK Government from OECD countries (notably the USA). As with many laws passed in the UK it goes further than similar legislation in other countries and in totally prohibiting facilitation payments it goes further than US law.
